Walking around the island, visitors encounter cats of all colors and personalities. It’s fascinating to see how some cats are shy and reserved while others are outgoing and affectionate. Their winter fur makes them even more adorable, and it’s a joy to interact with them.

A Visit to the Shrine

The island also features a shrine with a panoramic view of Aoshima. Although feeding cats at the shrine is not allowed, the cats are still very friendly and often follow visitors around, hoping for some attention.

Each cat on Aoshima has a distinct personality. Some are patient and wait their turn for food, while others are more assertive. It’s interesting to observe their interactions and see how they establish their own social hierarchy.

Night on the Island

Since there are no accommodations on the island, visitors usually stay overnight at guest houses on the mainland. These guest houses offer a comfortable stay with traditional Japanese meals, making the entire experience even more memorable.

Challenges of Island Life

Life on Aoshima isn’t without its challenges. The island’s population has dwindled to just three residents, and all the cats are now neutered to prevent overpopulation. It’s sad to think that eventually, the cats might disappear from the island as they age. However, the residents and volunteers continue to care for them, ensuring they live a comfortable life.

A Special Encounter

One of the famous cats on Aoshima, known as “Dokin-chan,” resembles a cartoon character and rarely goes outside. Meeting Dokin-chan is a special treat for visitors, and it highlights the unique charm of Cat Island.

Supporting the Cats

Efforts are ongoing to support the cats on Aoshima. Volunteers and support groups regularly bring food and supplies, and fundraising initiatives help provide for the cats’ needs. As cat lovers, we are inspired by the dedication of these volunteers and hope more people will contribute to this cause.
