After finishing a school day in China, working as a teacher, I found Ninja the kitten in the back of a truck looking sick with a very bad eye. He was meowing a lot, and I couldn’t reach him. I asked a tall lady nearby if she could get him, and she managed to stretch out and pick him up. I put him into a cardboard box and called a taxi to take me to the vets. The driver wouldn’t accept animals inside his vehicle, so I set out to cycle 3km to the vets. I put Ninja in his box in the basket at the front of my bike and put my bag on top to make sure it didn’t fall out.

Along the way he was meowing but stayed calm. The poor little guy must have been scared and unsure what was going on. We made it to the vets, and Ninja was diagnosed with herpes, which isn’t a big problem but can flare up now and then and cause problems with your eyes and nose.

Ninja began to receive care and had his first experiences playing with cat toys. We had to wait about 10 days until he was healthy enough to have his first vaccination. Then another 21 days for the second and a further 21 days for the third. During this time, both the vets and I were anxious about the possibility of him catching deadly viruses, especially living inside a vet’s practice. They do their best to disinfect and clean, but these viruses are difficult to completely remove. We have had so many experiences of animals we’ve rescued suffering with these diseases that its always a stressful time taking a new rescue into the vets and hoping they don’t catch anything.

Thankfully Ninja made it through this period of time and has been fully vaccinated. His monthly boarding costs are around $100 per month, which is in addition to hundreds of dollars of boarding and medication costs I’m already paying. If you would like to donate towards some of this cost please use the form on this page. I will send anyone sponsoring Ninja, regular updates, photos and videos of him. If you can offer him a home please let me know. It’s possible to send animals on flights out of China, it just takes a number of months to prepare everything.

After surviving the initial critical phase at the vet, Ninja’s journey continued to captivate everyone involved. As he grew healthier and more playful, his charming personality began to shine through. His resilience not only amazed the veterinary staff but also inspired a community of animal lovers who followed his story.

Caring for Ninja wasn’t just about addressing his physical needs. It was also about nurturing his spirit, which had been dampened by his early experiences. Each day, I spent time playing with him, teaching him that human interactions could be gentle and loving. These moments were not only therapeutic for Ninja but incredibly rewarding for me as well.

Ninja’s presence at the vet clinic became a heartwarming testament to the power of second chances. His journey from a frightened, sickly kitten to a thriving, joyful cat underscored the critical role of veterinary care and compassionate foster parenting in rescue efforts.

To those considering the adoption of rescue animals, Ninja’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the commitment required. It’s not just a financial commitment but an emotional and time-intensive one. However, the rewards of seeing a pet recover and flourish are immeasurable.

As Ninja prepares for a potential forever home, his story continues to inspire and educate others about the joys and challenges of rescue animal care. If Ninja’s tale has touched your heart and you’re able to contribute to his ongoing needs, or if you think you can provide a loving home, please reach out. Every bit of support helps ensure that Ninja, and many like him, have the bright future they deserve. You can watch Nina’s rescue in this video I made. If you would like to adopt Ninja, he’s very gentle and sweet. Hit reply and let us know.
