The life of a stray cat is tough, we’ve been feeding many of them for a number of years and staying alive often means finding the best hiding place to shelter and hide from any dangers. Even though we’ve seen kittens in some unusual places, it’s not every day that you find them living inside a broken wall at the entrance to a restaurant compound.

I’d been feeding this white kitten and its identical twin for a few weeks after spotting them running into a small crack in the wall. This wall was a tiny safe haven in a dangerous world, too small for larger prey to enter. The kittens mother cat couldn’t fit into the gap but she was a wonderful protective mum who pushed her babies inside to protect them.

Mother cat would sit outside keeping watch and when she saw me putting down a bowl of water and chicken every night, she was starving but made sure to let her babies eat first. When other cats approach her she hissed and they didn’t dare come any closer, she was a super strong mum cat. I’m used to feeding cats all scrambling to be first to eat so it’s lovely to see this hungry mother taking such loving actions.

Night after night I watched and waited as they came out to eat the food I put down. As stray animals often do with the people that feed them, they begin to trust you and come a little closer, taking more risks. This White kitten wasn’t afraid of me, he would usually listen to his mother warning him to stay hidden but this day he came out close to me, hungry and ready to eat.

After eating some chicken and cat food, I noticed he had a problem, he was dribbling and appeared to be struggling to breathe. All of a sudden he began to struggle, I wasn’t sure if he was choking or extremely sick. I took a video to send immediately to a vet. After a few moments he wasn’t struggling so much but I knew It was better to rescue him. Taking a stray animal away from its family is always difficult, a decision which meant he would likely never see his family again, but maybe the only chance for him to survive.

I acted quickly and managed to get close enough to pick him up. There wasn’t anything to carry him in while I drove so I had to put him inside a lightly tied plastic bag in the boot of my car with air holes in. Luckily At the vets he tested negative for any deadly diseases and could finally relax, eating and drinking freely.

Snowflake began to recover from the challenges of life on the streets, he was warm in his nice cosy home in the vets. This was the beginning of the story of a Kitten I named snowflake. There will be more stories about snowflake in the future but for now, check out a video I made of snowflake’s rescue and visit to the vets.

The Resilience of Stray Cats

Stray cats face numerous challenges in their daily lives, from finding food and shelter to avoiding predators and dangers. The story of the white kitten and its twin living in a broken wall exemplifies the resilience and survival instincts of these animals. Stray cats often find the most unexpected and ingenious hiding spots to protect themselves and their offspring.

The Importance of Trust and Compassion

Building trust with stray animals is a gradual process that requires patience and compassion. Sometimes for us this can mean feeding a cat or dog for many weeks until they begin to recognise and trust you. As Snowflake and his mother began to trust us, it shows how human kindness can make a significant difference in their lives. This trust is essential for rescuers to provide the necessary care and support to these vulnerable animals.

The Role of Mother Cats in the Wild

Mother cats play a crucial role in the survival of their kittens. They teach their young how to find food, protect them from dangers, and ensure they grow strong enough to survive on their own. The protective mother cat in this story is a testament to the fierce dedication and love that feline mothers exhibit towards their offspring. Rescuing stray animals often involves difficult decisions, such as separating a kitten from its family to save its life. This story highlights the emotional and ethical challenges that rescuers face. While it’s heart-wrenching to take a stray animal away from its family, it’s sometimes the only way to ensure their survival and provide them with the care they need.

The Recovery Process

Once rescued, the journey to recovery for stray animals can be long and challenging. For Snowflake, the white kitten, this meant receiving medical attention, nourishment, and a safe place to rest. Veterinary care plays a critical role in rehabilitating rescued animals and giving them a second chance at life.
